Broken
The educational system in this country has long been broken, and it was broken by the people who were going to “Improve” education. The political system is also broken, and again, it was broken by those who ostensibly intended to improve it. The media, whose agenda is the reforming of America in their twisted image, have both promoted and accelerated the process. This has been going on for years.
Where we are now, is where no true sane voice will ever be heard again. First of all, anyone who has their head firmly on their shoulders got it there because they lived, and saw the way things are. As a consequence of this, no sane and reasonable person arrives at that point without some baggage or other. And whatever that baggage is, the media will rip him/her to shreds with it. Nothing will stop this. If there are ten righteous men in America, you can bet that they will not withstand the scrutiny of the media, even if they were stupid enough to run, which for the most part, they will not want to do. In this world, no decent person wants to subject themself to the deep anal probing of the media, and nobody in their right mind will blame them.
So we get- on both sides of the aisle- candidates who the media picks for us. And not one of them will do anything we want them to do. Right now, the candidates are being chosen based on theior ability to be beaten by Hillary. Wingnuthead is out of the picture and will soon enough be asked to step back and let Hillary run, and the Media knows that Hillary can easily defeat Romney, Gingrich, Perry, Paul, Bachman. Cain was about the only real problem child, and though none of the allegations about him have ever become anything but allegations, he’s already gone.
I hear a big wad of people saying “I’ll vote for wingnuthead before I vote for newt/romney/whomever”, There’s another faction that says “We have to vote for the ostensibly right wing guy or we slip further and faster”.
Long ago I came to the incontrovertible conclusion that neither choice is acceptible.
We can fix this, or we can just slide into the pit, folks. How do you want it? with a whimper or with a bang? Think about that while the hoi polloi are distracted by “voting”. How much of your freedom will you have to lose before you realize it’s time?

We can fix this? I’d really like to hear how. It ain’t going to be by voting.
Prezactly.
“If there are ten righteous men in America, you can bet that they will not withstand the scrutiny of the media,…”
Unless they are democrats.
Righteous democrat. Righteous. Democrat. Righteousdemocrat.
Nope, I think I know the words you’re using, but I never heard them used in that manner.
It’s time to go back to zero and start again. There’s no way to untangle the web that’s been woven over the last sixty years. The only way is to go back to the beginning. Clear the slate.
Have to agree with Midwest Chick. Now where did I put that “reset button”.
It is either that, or we go ahead and get in line behind all the other lemmings. There is no other “choice”.
As for me, I hate lemmings.
Ain’t voting our way out of this one.
Peace will continue as long as the .gov keeps an understanding of how far to push people before they buck.

There’s a line in Poul Anderson’s story “Hunters of the Sky Cave” that sums things up well. I’ve tried to paraphrase it before, but this time I managed to find the full text:
“The measure of our damnation is that every one of us with any intelligence—and there are some—every one sees the Long Night coming. We’ve grown too wise; we’ve studied a little psycho-dynamics, or perhaps only read a lot of history, and we can see that Manuel’s Empire was not a glorious resurgence. It was the Indian summer of Terran civilization. (But you’ve never seen Indian summer, I suppose. A pity: no planet has anything more beautiful and full of old magics.) Now even that short season is past. Autumn is far along; the nights are cold and the leaves are fallen and the last escaping birds call through a sky which has lost all color. And yet, we who see winter coming can also see it won’t be here till after our lifetimes … so we shiver a bit, and swear a bit, and go back to playing with a few bright dead leaves.”
I’m not sure if that describes the current generation, or the couple prior. I don’t like the thought of the nation I love collapsing in my lifetime, but trying to stop it seems like trying to stop a volcano with a kitchen fire extinguisher.
Sudden recognition of this could still pull our bacon from the fire.
“God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God?”
Seems the media got overly-impressed with themselves with the Pentagon papers and Nixon’s resignation. They went from reporting the news from the background to making the news in the foreground.
That, and being put in the entertainment – make-a-profit – divisions of their new corporate masters.
Sometimes you need to rip all the old bandages off, then re-wash and re-bind the wound for it to heal

Recently Henry “Nostrilitis” Waxman accused the GOP of wanting to repeal the 20th century.
I think that’s about right. The GOP leadership sure as hell doesn’t want that, any more than the Democrats do, but there are plenty of people in the US who would embrace it.
If we could simply reset our federal government to that of 1911 I think we’d be fine. It would mean the end of income tax and we’d have to re-formulate some laws (like the regulation of nuclear power, space industry, commercial air travel, etc) but at least that way we’d have something that made sense again.
And while I’m dreaming, I’d like a winning Powerball ticket.
“And while I’m dreaming, I’d like a winning Powerball ticket”.
No you don’t. Think of the tax implications.
Just curious, Og…what are your thoughts on this:

Sounds like it’s worth a try, at least.
Zonker! You’re alive!
The Wretchard piece linked is a great idea. How many people do you think you can get to follow it? Ten? Fifty? a thousand? If they do it, and we accomplish something that threatens the status quo in DC, do you think it will be allowed to let stand? I don’t.
Well said Og, and it’s NOT going to be pretty, as the congresscritters et al, do NOT want to give up their ‘power’…
Eric Burdon sang it best: the refrain from “Tobacco Road”:
Bring dynamite,
Bring a crane,
Blow it up,
Start all over again…”
Anything but the Tobacco Road Solution is too full of what-ifs to even consider.
Alive and kicking, Og! ;)
Pretty much anything that shakes up the status quo in DC is a good thing. The approach outlined in Wretchard’s post seems to cost very little while offering the chance (however slim) at some decent returns. So it might not work….and your point is? You want a guarantee or something? ;) As far as I can see, if it starts having any productive results, it will….shake the parasites up a bit…cause them to lose a bit of sleep…and maybe cause them to panic and make some (more) mistakes. Anything that keeps them off-balance and clouds their thinking is a good thing.
Anyhow, hope you and the family have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
You too, Zonk. But I asked, how many people do you think you can get to follow Wrechard’s plan? Really? If i were to give you a penny for every one who did, would I need more than a twenty? That’s my point. Not that I don’t think it would or wouldn’t work but that nobody will do it.
Oh, I misunderstood. Yeah, I don’t think you’d need a quarter, actually. Most people know better than to listen to me. Overall, how many people will do it, though…no clue. Am I optimistic? No. Do I think it’s worth a shot anyhow? Yes.
