Doesn’t it bug you
one of my customers said, “To spend all day working so close to live power like that?”
“No”
“I’d never do it”
“It’s part of this job. besides, I’m not going to reach up there and grab it”
“You could have a brainfart and accidentally reach for it”
“And I could jump out of my truck in 75 mph traffic too, but I’m not going to”
it does amuse me. For all the times I’ve done stupid things that were nearly fatal, and all the other people whose intention to do harm to me I’ve managed to avoid, that someone would be so concerned about me being an idiot at this stage of the game.
Projection maybe?
I suspect there a connection to more primitive animals that bugs some people still. Like a moth to the flame.
I recall when I was learning to drive a car in traffic at 16 how I once got worn out worrying about staying in my own lane. Also recall learning how to carry a full cup of coffee. It’s far easier not to look at the cup because one invariably over-corrects.
You customer may not be a sheeple, but it would appear that he retains some of the worries of a herd animal.
Prior experience has demonstrated to me that I lack the presence of mind to do something like that.
There is, for example, the time I absent-mindedly tried to close the wood stove door by pushing it with my fingertips, rather than by grabbing the handle.
I was 27. Yeah.
As much as I hate to admit it, I have one of those moments in my own past, but it was of such stupendous stupidity that I hesitate to describe it. Mercy, I was DUMB. And old enough to vote, too!
Same as with guns. They are afraid of them, ergo, so should you.
Ed, the kind of presence of mind you describe, is universal. Had a buddy, a Navy ordinancemen, who tried to catch a pod we were loading on a wing mount, which was “slipping” off the jack used in attempting to position it to said wing mount. It was my turn to have enough presence of mind to pull him away from the pod. 2500 lbs of pod is not an easy thing to catch…it tends to catch you first.
As for me, I try to catch falling extra cheese pizzas as they slide off the pizza paddle while they are coming right out of the oven. Damn cheese is hot, and sticky…and the pepperoni leaves neat little circular burn marks too.
Remember testing if the brake pads where cool enough to dismount by testing the rotor with my mark 1 finger tip temperture sensing device.
Burned then too.
