far enough north
There is “A” radio station on each band. Quaint. Your choices are radio on or off, and most times i keep it off because it all sounds like npr. All that is missing is “All things considered” with the occasional earthy comment from Tom Bodette to be utterly annoying.

XM is the way to go up there.
If i was staying longer than a week, you betcha.
Rd-tip: go to radio-locator.com – they have a Canoodlian section…enter your location data. You might be able to get more stations by direct frequency tuning instead of the “seek” function on your radio.
IIRC, you’re few hundred klics N. Of Toronto, so any “clear-channel” AM Detroit stations might be there some of the time.
XM is right! :-)
Sometimes I am torn between the desire to be a live audience member for Prairie Home Companion (or What Do You Know? or Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me!) and smashing my little toe with a ball peen hammer. I usually just smash my toe. Less residual damage.
I tried to listen to Nationalsozialisteschen Proletariat Radio for a while in the early 90’s. I could stand it for nearly twenty minutes. It was all I could do to turn the radion off rather than shoot it.
The Missus got free tickets to see Garrison Keillor a few years ago. ‘Bout a quarter of the way through his diatribe I went to the box office and demanded a refund. I complained that I had come to be amused, not to have my intelligence insulted by some brain dead ultra socialist. They apologised, and gave me the money someone had paid for those tickets so The Missus and I went to a nice bar and had a drink on the way home.

What’s wrong with taking along a stack of books on CD. Get them from the library, tell the librarian you’ll be out of town and back on NN August 2012, and she will move the due date to a couple of days past your return when you check out – no need to remember to renew them by phone while up there!
I’ve done quite a few books I would’ve never read due to their length. Les Miserables for one.
I realize this is probably a “coals to Newcastle” situation but I bet you’re far north enough to see the aurorae, should any happen….
Whereabouts are you? I spent a couple of summers on the north side of the Fox Basin and a few other places up that-a-way(putting in automated radars for the USAF/RCAF). Beautiful country.
