We don’t seem to be able to do it.
I mean, there are some great American made cars that have become classics- like the Mustang, or the old split bumper camaro.
The 2012 Ford Focus is probably the nicest line of any of the new cars I’ve seen, but they cock it all up by putting on those bulging eyes and gigantic taillights.
I mean, it looks like it was designed in a wind tunnel without looking like a jellybean, and it has decent character. And then they try to make it look more like a Nissan Joke.

I like the looks of the 2012 Ford Escape more than the 2013 Ford Escape. What’s up with those Ford designers?
I think they’re drunk with power. DRUNK WITH POWER I SAY!
or maybe just drunk.
They do it because they can.
FWIW my wife wants to trade her van in on an Escape when she pays it off in another year and a half (assuming we still drive cars in a year and a half). And she’s already said she doesn’t want one of the 2013 body style Escapes, so we’ll be looking for a gently-used 2012 for her.
Mine’s an ’09 and I love it.
Nathan: I can highly reccomend Carmax. yes, its a bit more expensive than purchasing from a private individual, but it does make for a GREAT experience. We have purchased two cars there already, and we will purchase more.
Nathan, we have a 2012 Ford Escape, and thus far we like it. We like it so much we’ll be keeping it for a while.
My wife wanted the Red one, I wanted the Blue one so we got the Red one. I wanted the Blue one because:
1. It was Blue
2. It was $1200 cheaper
3. It had a manual transmission
Well, apparently Europe has certain standards for vehicles that require them to be “safer” when hitting pedestrians.
The new regulations require that a car hitting a pedestrian at 25 km/h shouldn’t cause significant injury. Hence the bulbousness of recent designs.
Last month I bought a 2012 Escape. I drove the 2013, wasn’t that impressed with it, especially with the price difference between comparably equipped (i.e., loaded) versions. Mine has the 2.5L Duratec 4 and 6 speed auto, and so far I’m getting 31.5 on the highway, 27 or so mixed. It beats the snot out of my old Sidekick, which was drove more like a small tractor than anything.
