In Clifford D Simak’s book “City”
he talks about the move away from the cities because of the ready availability of inexpensive and fast personal transport.
Simaks’ book is a fantasy, and not even a very good one- though I enjoy it because of the way he deals with the dogs.
What it does do, though, is highlight the way we are being controlled. Rahm and Daley before him are trying to make Chicago a car-free city. Gas prices are driving people to smaller cars and making them drive less.
An immobile population is much easier to control. Think about that.

Of course! Can’t let the Plebs escape and not pay City Taxes, now can they?
“freedom of movement” has that word in it. You know, the one they hate so much.
I sold my Blazer and replaced it with a little civic sedan. Gets about 40 MPG if I keep it around 60 on the highway. Change in employment has be running about 90 miles a day and I just could not afford the Blazer any more.
I ended up with an old Ford 4×4 so I am still covered for deer season. Might even be a little better as I don’t care so much about making a mess in it.
The civic is a hoot to drive in the city. More fun that a motor bike and you can stay dry.
