It’s a universal thing, however. In Mexico, they speak louder and slower when they think it will make a difference to the poor schlub that speaks not a word of Spanish. It’s a quirky and almost visceral response which happens without really thinking about it. It’s like making yourself NOT blink when someone’s taking a swipe at your head.
