When I was courting the Ogwife
I had just discovered she was a collector of matchbooks, and took her to a place that made each diner a book of custom printed matches which were on their table at dinner. They also had a little quartet, and I thought they were pretty good, so I slipped the piano player a twenty and asked if they could work in “Take five”. Not only could they, but they dedicated it to us (They had been the ones to print the matchbooks, so they knew who we were).
Dave Brubeck just died, a day short of 92. God rest him.
yes, I’m mad about Brubeck. I like your eyes; I like him too.

Have been a fan of Brubeck for over thirty years; he will be missed.
I never knew that line from New Frontier was about Brubeck – because Fagen’s not always the most clear, and because I never looked up the lyrics to figure out who was being referenced…
He’s prepared to meet the challenge of the New Frontier.
Attended two of his sessions in San Diego
a long time ago…very special.
Her’s been working on the New Frontier he’s now a part of for 30 years now. I would love to hear his musical score for the Mass.

Also, Fagen’s Nightfly album: one of the best album covers ever.

The worst thing about Take Five was it was so popular and therefor overplayed on the radio. Thank God there’s such a deep bench in jazz and a jazz station could actively avoid Brubeck 364 days a year without shorting you. On either Brubeck OR jazz in general.
I vaguely remember that, in the out groove to one of the tracks on Time Out, (maybe Blue Rondo a la Turk), you can hear drummer Joe Morello laughing with relief that they’d actually got through the damned thing.

Always liked Brubeck.
