Chainsaw MK 2, and the Intarweb is Awesome!
I got the chainsaw running a couple days back but it didn’t seem to want to idle, and watching an internet video I discovered I had the throttle cable set wrong. Once I got that right I managed to get the idle and the high and low jets adjusted nicely, and it fair hums. (It’s an easy mistake, where the throttle cable goes is counterintuitive until you see a cross section of it installed properly) And then it wouldn’t cut- but I figured it was the chain. My buddy Werner showed me it was a Nerf chain, designed for people who were likely to hurt themselves. I had no idea the nanny state had gone this far, but there it is. Anyway, it turns out I had already purchased one of the non-nerf type chains (non anti kickback), and I sharpened it, put it on, and it cuts frozen hardwood like a hot knife through butter. I loves me a chainsaw.
No, not enough to get one socketed to my arm, but still.

Say more about this ‘nerf chain’, please.
A lot, maybe all, of the “Consumer” grade saws out there come with Nerf chains. The nerf chains have “standoffs” on the links between the cuting edges that prevent the cutting edges from biting deeply into the wood. They look like this: Note the “nerf bars”?
Pro grade chains have a sort of a “Depth gauge” right in front of the cutting edge but they are small and can easily be filed down to an optimum depth when sharpening the cutting edge. Those look like this.
Still basically the same cutting edge, but without the impossible to override built in safety. It’s easy to tell when you have a nerf chain because it will cut at the tip long after it stops cutting along the bar, because the nerf bars don’t come into play at the tip.
Ive been using a nerd bar for better’n 20 years and never knew it.
Heh. Nerf chain. That’s great.
I’ve never seen something like that. Seems about as smart as giving somebody a dull kitchen knife.
I thought you were talking about the difference between chipper and full chisel chains. I haven’t run my saw enough to get a feel for the difference between those yet.
I learned something – thanks.
Since the chainsaw company is protecting me from myself, I will stop using safety glasses, wear slippers, and drink beer next time I have to cut some wood up. Excellent!

Shh – you’ll give them ideas.
SWEEEET! I like the way you think, Brian.
