Range day!
Actually, I’ve gotten a couple range days in and haven’t had time to blog about them, but suffice to say they rocked on ice, as all range days do.
The one on the saturday before easter was awesome. Took my nephiew with, and a co-worker came also, we sat at the range for hours and just made hundreds of holes in paper. My co-worker had never used a real military sling before, and I showed him the technique described here. He was amazed at how much control it gives you, and if you’ve never done so before, you should give it a try, it’s like sitting your rifle on a tripod.
Yesterday’s range day, on the other hand, was solo, and it couldn’t have been a better range day if it had involved oral sex
I took out a bolt 22 romanian training rifle, and nothing else. I had shot it the week previous but with bulk ammo it shot all over the place. This week I brought along a couple of boxes of match ammo, and did MUCH better- to the tune of 1-1/2″ groups at fifty yards(off a bag!)
So I’ll mount the scope properly, and pay some attention to the trigger, and maybe even clean up the stock (do they use these bastards to row canoes with in Romania? I’d really like to know.) I also celebrated April 15 by purchasing a Ruger MKII, blue, heavy barrel, adjustable sights. Can’t wait to get that to the range either, but everything in good time.
The range I went to is in Winamac, Indiana. It’s a great range, not a lot of firing positions but fully handicapped accessible and with high, heavy sand berms surrounding each range area. It’s a long trip in the country to get there, and the drive, through the fertile soil of northwest Indiana, puts me in a peaceful frame of mind. I threw in a CD of my personal favorite comfort music, and enjoyed the ride. Tippecanoe state park is also nearby, I can see dragging the wife and daughter down here someday, spending a long weekend, decompressing.
By today, when I had to do some small jobs for a friend, nothing could harsh my mellow- I had a great time, and it will help me get through the week.
I cannot understand why anyone objects to this on any level. I really can not.

Man, i cannot wait until i get another chance to get to the range. Without my own piece, and now, for the time being i’m living with my folks, so it will be hard to manage …
i like slings. haven’t used one since i was the rifle team in college.
