A modest proposal.
Instead of targeting law abiding people who will never shoot up a school, let’s do some drilling down to the facts, and make laws based on that.
Lets make a law that makes it illegal to take a loaded gun into a public OR PRIVATE place AND use it to shoot at innocent people. This gets directly to the heart of the issue, does it not?
Why arent’ lawmakers clamoring to make this happen?

I’m pretty sure there are more than a couple already on the books that cover the basics of the italicized text. And let me say I’m shocked! SHOCKED! that people continue to disregard those laws! Clearly we need to double-dog dare them by passing ANOTHER law!
Sorry; forgot to include the tags.
Because the lawmakers know that the only thing standing between them and what they believe to be their rightful place as lord and master of the rest of us subjects is the arms in the hands of the citizenry. The thought that honest, law-abiding Americans have weapons scares the crap out of them, so they look for excuses to disarm them.
Did you hear your — well, thank God he’s NOT your senator — try to rant and rave (well, he ranted and raved alright, but not without failing to make his point in a way that actually — you know — made sense) that:
If we REQUIRE a background check, THAT will stop criminals from getting guns?
I am NOT certain which is more astonishing. That Tick Turban thinks that passes for high cunning, or that he thinks we’re stupid enough to fall for it.
Or, for the win, that nobody stood up right then and there and shot him as a clear and present danger to public safety. You know, the mad-dog defense, “He needed killin’, Judge.”

“And the jury awarded him/Both ears and the tail.”
(From, I think, Tom Lehrer.)

Boy, you’ve had some wild ideas, Og, but this one is REALLY out there.
Or the government could tax the shooting of people and issue licences for it. That would certainly reduce the number. Maybe even set up an exchange where people could buy “shooting credits” to offset a bad shooting.
I love you man.
Hale, they could call them “Shooting indulgences”…naaa sounds too Catholic.
Nah, you never want the governemnt granting licenses to shoot people.
They would corrupt the process some how. they always do.
