It does make one wonder which direction the college of Cardinals is going to go. Will they return to electing an Italian? Will they seek someone who has the youth (initially) and charisma of a “John Paul”? Will the next pontiff elect to continue Benedict’s attempt(s) at bringing conservative and progressive factions of the church together, or will that idea be tossed under the bus of expediency?
Will there be a Pontiff who has the stones to call Islam for what it is, or will (if words are said at all) the politics of political correctness/diversity (and to some extent ecumenicalism) have all the non-Muslim faiths singing Kumbiya while Islam continues to sharpen the sword to be used in exterminating all infidel faiths.

It’s gonna be another European white guy of a certain age. And nothing will change. Because that’s how they roll.
Think the next one will dare take the name “Peter the Roman?”
Excuse my irreverence…
What do you call a resigned pope?
Ex Benedict
I’ve already heard reports he was too pooped to Pope.
Yes, I’m going to hell, going directly to hell, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

This does, however, give new meaning to “giving it up for Lent.”
Seriously, I hope his last days give him peace.
