Back when John Paul II was rapidly declining, I asked a friend(Catholic) why he didn’t do this; she insisted it just couldn’t be done, you were in till the end.
I’m the Emeritus did; from the sound of things, it’ll be better for his Church and him. And probably less trouble for the Church than “Oh my, he’s dead, call the cardinals!”
JP2 didn’t retire because Ratso was trying to clean up a mess. Hopefully this has all been set in motion.
