I have had better burgers,
but not that damned often.
Gross’ burgers doesn’t have a website. It looks like it was a gas station at one time in it’s past. It is run by a Jarhead who has decorated the place with militaria- including bayonets, the front end of a flatfender Jeep, a BAR, a lot of stripper clips and live rounds. There isn’t a lot of places to sit and eat, but even if you get it and eat it in your car you will not be disapointed. I had the “All American” which is a triple meat burger- the patties are fried thin and crisp on the edges- and the fries are garlicky and taste to have been fried in beef tallow rather than oil. Werner and I went there after a morning of blowing shit up and cutting wood; the HK MP5 22 was a straight-up hoot to shoot, and I might have to borrow it from him to do an appleseed this upcoming summer.

I love burgers like that. My mom made them that way on the Sunbeam electric grill back when Johnson was President.
Live rounds?
Knox: On your left, as you head out to the east on rt 30, there is a place called “Schoops” that makes your mom’s burgers. It’s in schererville, a couple miles east of Rt 41.
Robert: Stripper clips full of them i displays all around the room. An old fashioned “Bazooka” too. No live rounds for it, as I could see.
Live rounds are not to be feared.
Can make for good decor. One of those joints can shorten your life, but what is life without good experiences.
Great burgers are not to be missed!!! :-) Tied in with shooting, makes for a great day!
They have an ad in GSL’s GunNews every month. I’ve told myself I was going to stop in if I’m over to Danville. Glad to hear your positive review.
Hat Trick, if you’re ever feeling despondent, I’d go there. It will either lift your spirits, or put you out of your misery.
Not sure how much experience you’ve had with Appleseed Og but speaking as an instructor I’d suggest that MP-5 .22 would be less than ideal. Now that said, it is very much a run what ya brung affair but I’d suggest a 10/22 or a Marlin 795 (like their new Appleseed package through Davidsons that comes with a coupon for a free ‘seed) would be a better choice to wring everything possible out of your weekend.

I can get 10/22’s pretty cheap, but really don’t like them much. THe marlins are nice but I’m not a fan of the plastic stocks. I only thought the MP5 because it’s tack driving accurate, you can get 10 round mags easy, and the sights are easily adjustable. Why would that not be a good Appleseed gun?
Looking at those 10 rounders they’re the same length as the 25 rounders. That long and they’ll be getting in the way of getting a good position.
But if the sights adjust easily and consistently and you can put an adjustable sling on it then by all means get it to the line.

Oh, that’s a big deal. Yeah,I see what you mean. I figured the ten rounders would be small. Well, scratch that idea. Guess I get to do a ruger if I like it or not.
It’s not a game ender but it does make it frustrating to get properly slung up for standing and gets in the way for seated and prone. Haven’t seen an H&K on the line yet but have had folks show up with rim fire AR variants and 10/22s with the 25 rounders. Almost all ended up transitioning to an instructor’s loaner rifle or borrowing 10 rd mags before the end of the day on Saturday.
What about the 10/22s don’t you like?
Familiarity that breeds contempt. I understand why they make them the way they make them, but it’s too damned cheesy a rifle to suit me. yeah, you can do all sorts of stuff with them, yeah, they are teh awesome, but I still like the beautiful old designs and the 10/22 is just not. Imagine if you travelled a lot and everywhere you went, you rented a Ford Focus. A perfectly adequate car, but when you got home you would want something nicer, right?
That’s actually a better reason than any I’ve heard before when someone didn’t like the 10/22.
And the hardest to fix.
Tell ya what…
Rather than drop a couple of hundred in a rifle you’ll never really like I’ve got a couple all set up for Appleseed. I’d be happy to loan either of them out to get a shooter to the line. Besides, I keep saying I’m going to make it to Indy for a 1500 and one of Roberta’s blog meets.

BG: I can go pick one off a rack any day of the week. I appreciate the offer, but I am surrounded by them every other weekend. A good friend of mine makes almost every wood stock you ever saw on a 10/22. His plant is full of them.
You know what I’d really like? I’d like one of those Chiappa M1 carbine knockoffs, because I think it would let me shoot my carbine better. Unfortunately I hear bad things about them, so I guess I’m stuck with the rotary.
I would like to find a good (read cheap) laminat stock for one of my 10/22’s. I’ve got one in stainless and I think it need a M14 style stock in laminate. It has peep sites on top just like my AR.
Not the 10/22 AR but the other one.
Heavy barrel, Paul?
Well, if you’re going to build one I’ll throw another hint out there.
Don’t buy a full set of the Tech-Sights.
Nothing against them at all but….
Get just a Tech-Sight front sight base, add an A2 front sight post and get a Daisy 5899 rear sight. It’s cheaper, gives a bit more sight radius, and a bit more range of adjustment. It also brings both windage and elevation adjustment to the rear sight with good thumb wheels.

Inch and a quarter sling swivels and GI web sling and you’re solidly set.

No, Og. I don’t see the need for a heavy barrel on a 22. They are all stock barrel.
Now if the heavy barrel had an integrated silencer I might be tempted.
I’ve seen the signs and I think you’ve mentioned Schoops before. I plan to go.
