End of an era
I’ve been told by what I consider to be reliable sources, that the P-38 will disapear soon.

Anyone who has been in the military, as well as boy Scout types the world around, are familiar with this ubiquitous GI tool.
And now, a thing of the past. Oh, there will probably always be chinese copies, but the real thing, the sucker on my keychain right now, is going to disapear. Why? mre’s. No can to open in an MRE pack.

Dude, got an extra one? My keys need one, too, especially since some assfuck ganked my Risdon pin.
The P-38 is one of the greatest Simple Tools of all time. It can make a bad-ass weapon in an alley-fight, too.
damn fine tool
I’m really sorry to read this. As good inventions go, the P-38 can opener is one of the best. I…
Broad: You can get them on Amazon.com for 3.50 a copy – just ordered two myself!
Broad: I have a couple you can have, but you can get them at the Army Surplus in Hammond. For the time being, they’re still plentiful
Fish: $3.50? the army paid like a penny apiece for these. Send me three fifty and I’ll send you ten of them!
NOOOOOO! I always wanted one… My Dad’s P38 got some high mileage doing everything from opening cans of baby formula to 30W motor oil to letters and boxes. It was almost an extension of my Dad’s hand.
You know what’s going to happen once they phase them out, don’tcha? They’re going to become indispensable, and only the soldier who decided to keep his will be the one to save the day. There’ll always be cans that need opening, yanno.

I have one on my keychain that’s been there since 1968; came off a can of C rations. Still works great; it also doubles as a screwdriver at times.
I’d better take care of the one I have then.
Dammit! I’ve got one on my keyring that’s been there for at least ten years, and gave each of my kids one a couple of years ago.
Well, the local surplus stores still have them; guess I’ll need to buy some extras.
I’ll have to stop at the local surplus store and get a few, then.
