Last night
on Austin City Limits, I watched Emmylou Harris singing “Leaving Lousiana in the broad daylight” on Austin City Limits.
That girl can still sing, dammit. And she looks good. Like expensive plastic surgery good, no neck wattles, no crows feet, nothing. Sonofa bitch. G-d bless her, and may she keep looking like that until she’s 190, singing the whole time.

The continued ability is even more amazing when you consider that, that night, her voice was betraying her, with an annoying buzz that wasn’t there when she was younger, and breaking in the upper range. I think that cup she had next to her mike stand was some concoction (probably blended ice) to sooth her throat. And she managed to give THAT performance despite all that. A true trouper!
Rodney wasn’t bad, either.
Couple of our faves here at Casa d’Alger.

She went prematurely and totally grey very early, which tends to make her seem older than she really is – – she’s only 66. She’s been grey so long that I have a hard time remembering her as the pretty brunette who first broke out in the 1970’s. It’s almost as if they are two different people.
…until you hear her sing. The “Emmylou” in the voice is still there, still exactly the same, singing “Luxury Liner.”

Emmylou singing “Pancho and Lefty”. Everyone else who makes the effort only tarnishes that song.
