Well, at least it’s SNOWING!!!
I love the plains states, moreso because I’ve visited other places. Sure, there’s beauty in mountains and I do prefer to live in an area where there are a lot of changes in elevation, but the fecundity of the Midwest, from the Ohio River Valley to the Dakotas, from the fishing streams of the UP to the cornfields of Kansas, this is my home, and will always be. I like the fact that you can climb up on the bed of your pickup and see nearly a mile in any direction. I like the hydrocarbon smell of the oil refineries and the steel mills, the smell of fresh plowed dirt and autumn in the sandy shores of the Kankakee.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Galveston and Savannah and Seattle and Bangor, but I wouldn’t want to live there- not long, anyway.
No, no matter where I go I will always return here.
But the winters… man. I mean, we’ve had some mild ones which have spoiled us, but this winter reminds me… well, it reminds me how much more enjoyable Spring is, in the Midwest. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go tunnel through the snow and find my oil pan so I can change the url in the wife’s truck.

Oh man, that’s gonna be CHILLY… Good luck with it!
Well, at least the truck is inside!
The truck is inside but the pan is out in the snow? Just checking the visual.
Good luck on finding it. We got a strong three this am. Going quick as the temps are in the mid 20’s.
I think the mountains might be nice. I really like the smell of pines. But snow is deeper and winter is longer.
After the url change, the wife’s truck’s NEW URL iz gonna be;
http://www.takemewherethereznosaltedroads.com
Listen to your wife’s truck. It knows.

The oil drainh pan. The yellow plastic pan I use to do oil changes with, is out in the snow.
ANd i brought it in, and thawed it out. to discover that 15 years hard use has caused it to crack, and I could have left it out there and just bought a new one.
Jim: there’s no salt on Oregon roads, and most wish there was. We’re in the fourth day of a five to six day snowstorm.
Heck, you could have one of mine. I only have like EIGHT of them….
Yes. But spring brings the ice storms and tornadoes . I’d rather deal with some cild and snow.
You know spring will be arriving soon, when you get that one day…that one day in late Feb or early March, when there is that newly thawed earth smell in the warm(ish) breeze. The hint of warmer days to come. Of baseball playing on the transistor radio (while sitting in the back of the class…with the earphone plugged in).
And yeah, Hat Trick, it also brings Tornados (though ice storms are more of a fall annoyance … hail being Spring and Summers hardened precipitation event). And the straight line winds and thunder storm squall lines…
But a hard winter does make one appreciate those 50-60 degree days of spring all the more. Though at my age….the winters become increasingly harder to bear. The knees, shoulders, and various other aches and pains…just don’t seem to be as forgiving of the cold and snow…as ones body did in my youth.
I have been VERY glad the bat phone hasn’t rung much this winter. Working out in that for a few hours on a regular basis is not my idea of a good time. Stay warm.
