Race day!
Plan for tomorrow is to go to mass tonight, so I can wake up while the women sleep in. That way I can catch Monaco, we can go have breakfast, and I can return in time for the indy.
As the only sporting event I watch all year, I’m happy to set some time aside, but really, you watch the opening so you can hear Jim Nabors sing, then grill until the last twenty laps, keeping an eye open for accidents while you do. Monaco is a much more interesting race all around, but I usually don’t get to catch it. Hopefully it will all come together Sunday

I went to the 500 in 1979, had seats in the Southwest Vista. I flew up from DFW to O’Hare, then the short hop to Indy. The day before, a DC-10 had augured in at O’Hare. When we left O’Hare for Indy, we had to fly over the smoking hole from the DC-10 crash. At the race, Jim Nabors had a great voice then, and Tony Hulman was still alive to give the order to start engines.
Going home on that night, I had a day to play with, so I took a bump from my flight, got a free night in the Holiday Inn, a free steak dinner, and my ticket refunded under Rule 380. Got back to Carswell AFB only ten hours after I had intended to…
Been to a lot of tracks, haven’t made it to Indy … yet. Someday.
Usually I’m working a race somewhere on Memorial Day, but not this year. Looking forward to the same doubleheader as Og, including Jim Nabors (and usually the Perdue Marching Band, if memory serves).
Let’s go racing, boys!
Jenny
Purdue. Perdue is the chicken guy. Unless he also has a band. Which Is possible
The biggest bass drum- and drumsticks. Go Boilers.
I stand corrected. My apologies to all Boilermakers everywhere.
And if that’s not enough racing for you, the Coca-Cola 600 is after THAT. NASCAR under the lights at Charlotte!
Jenny
Are any of the racers doing both Indy and the Coca-Cola 600.
Jenny – I have a place in Indy, if you’re a friend of Og’s you’re welcome to crash there during future races.
