Auto Repair
There’s only one circumstance under which I will not attempt my own auto repairs, and that’s if they’re under warranty. Oh, I won’t mess with a trans, for the most part, but most anything else, I do myself.
Speaking of transmissions, the wife’s Escape has been leaving red drops under on the garage floor. I crawled under and looked, but couldn’t find the culprit.
So we took it back to CarMax. Where it’s under warranty. Now, I like Car Max, and I think they did the right thing, which was to take it to a transmission shop. Unfortunately, they took it to the WRONG transmission shop- Aamco. Which, if you don’t know, stands for “all automatics must come out”.
I called AAmco the next day and they said “oh, your splenglefrust seal is leaking, we’ll have to pull the transmission, it’s probably got some other internal problems we’ll want to get in there and fix as well” and i said “uh, no, you will not”
I picked up the vehicle and took it to my local place, a company called Widco (Pronounced wide-co)
Widco is always busy. They’re a hole in the wall. In fact, if you look at their shop, you get the idea that they slice up cars for parts on weekends, it’s a (seemingly) disorganized mess.
However, they are the unequalled best in the transmission business.
Widco looks at the escape, calls me back in a couple days. No biggie, I’m driving the wife’s old Honda in the interim. Anyway, the guy calls and says “$2350.00. Servo seal gone bad. Who do I call about getting paid?” I give him the number for the CarMax warranty department and thank him.
I call back in a few minutes wondering when I can pick it up, and he says “hey, they won’t pay me” and i think, shit, where am I gonna scrape up $2300? but he says “it’s below their deductible” and I think, wha? “I know they’re deductible is only like $50, man!” and he says “Yeah, and it’s twenty three dollars and fifty cents”
$23.50. Not $2350.00. Jesus. This was the transmission AAmco said had to come out and be completely rebuilt. Widco says “the trans is perfect, man, this is the Mazda trans, one of the best in the business. You got another 150,000 miles before you got any trouble with this trans, if you keep the fluid changed”
Finding the right shop, like finding the right doctor, like finding the right woman, is what it all comes down to. I know that Widco is a good shop, they have been for years. Sent a friend there a couple years back, he said “my dealer says my trans is shot and I need a new one at $2200.00” Widco took it on a monday, by wednesday (when he returned froma road trip) they said “it was your kickdown lever. It was sticking. We sprayed some wd-40 on it and wiggled it. It’s fine now. No charge”
I myself have had three transmissions rebuilt by these folks. I would not let anyone else touch my car’s transmission.

They’re still out there, but getting rare. The minute they hear “warranty work,” many of them only see dollar signs.
It’s nice to have a place like Widco around…
Widco — good to know.
I hope that I *won’t* need them anytime soon but good to know none the less…
If you are a guy who turns his own wrenches, the software they advertise on ther site is way cool, allows you to diagnose your problems pretty easily.
I’m one of those lucky pricks who has a company of mechanics, excuse me…. Technicians to choose from. They’re all studs, so I haven’t even changed my own oil in a couple of years.
I’ll bet they have a Workmate!
I have a couple of mechanics that are that way. Unfortunately I found some bad ones when I was younger before them.
“I’ll bet they have a Workmate!”
Yep. They use it to hold up the ashtray in the waiting area. It’s not quite strong enough, but it works.
Great post. I have a 2000 Caravan that doesn’t like the cold here in the Midwest. (It worked fine in the Sun Belt.) I can eliminate the “All
Automatics” company from the vendor list.
Unfortunately, the Widco locations are just over 90 miles south. I plan to have my local general mechanic try to diagnose it first. If he can’t fix it, the drive from cheesehead land to hoosier
country may be worth it.
*ALL* large car-repair chains are equally screwed up. AAMCO, Firestone, Goodyear, Sears, Midas (when they touch your car, they get your gold)…they’re all evil. Won’t let any of ’em touch any of my cars again. A good local independent shop can’t be beat.
Too bad Widco is 900 miles away, otherwise I’d tow my LeBaron that needs a tranny rebuild to them. I may rebuild it myself just for the experience. Widco’s going to make a few bucks off of me shortly for that cool looking software…maybe you can hit them up for a commission…
Ham: LeBaron’s have two transmission problems: the fluid is low, or the computer is shot. (anything 85 and newer) You can change the fluid yourself, it’s a snap- and the computer is something you can get in a yard for $15.
Oh yeah – you gotta love a good mechanic or most especially a great transmission place! We’ve always looked for both when we have moved. My husband has a Malibu that had a slow morning transmission problem – when it was cold outside – the car had to be thoroughly warmed up or the transmission just refused to shift. He called a local place up here – they immediately knew what the problem was – apparently it’s pretty common. I don’t know what it cost to fix it – but my husband was very impressed with them. (He always used to work on our cars years ago – when he had time and we had no money)
Good on you for taking care of minor car repairs yourself. Widco sounds like my father’s garage – he’s a decent, straightforward guy who is the antithesis of the scheister mechanic stereotype. By the way, call it blue-collar pride or something, but my sister and I gauge the actractiveness of a man according to his mechanical dexterity with typical maintenance problems with vehicles. For example, Russell Crow could give us an oil change; George Clooney could not. You are an oil change guy. Congratulations to your wife!
I love the category “oil change guy”! I married one, too. Sooooo fortunate.
Of course, I do have to share him with half of the people we know, in one way or another … there are too-few handy people around, anymore.
There’s a Firestone nearby that used to be wonderful. Please note “used to be”. They changed managers and went downhill from there.
Happily, a friend with car trouble found a GOOD place, and no, it’s not a chain.
Some things I do myself, but- especially this time of year- I don’t like to take things apart with the cold wind blowing around my ears.
