First Williams, then Bacall.
I loved Robin Williams’ acting, especially in “What dreams may come”. I hope there is someone who loves him enough to rescue him from hell.
Lauren Bacall was a stunningly beautiful woman, in her day, even as far forward as The Shootist she was easy on the eye- but was always an avowed leftist shitbag Of course redistribution was ok for other people, but she earned her money, not like those other greedy bastards who just had it float down on them from above because they had great legs. Wait…
Anyway, I don’t understand suicides but I do understand manic depressives, and I further understand that alcohol and blow is not a good plan of self medication for those problems. Add that to his other demons and it wasn’t going to end well. Still. Suicide? What did I do? I got a lot of people that need killing more than me.
lauren. The world forgives people for being ignorant if they’re beautiful, or even funny, or have a great voice. People will listen for hours to Morgan Freeman because he has an awesome voice; no matter that it’s racist shit he spouts. People put up with Bacall’s ignorance because she had great tits and good gams. And despite how nasty he was to , for instance, Palin, Williams had a huge audience.
People will forgive you for telling lies if you do so entertainingly, Mark Twain made a career out of it. So have Keith Olbermann, Bill Maher, hell, all of the soviet style media. And tell those lies enough and they become the truth, especially if you can laugh along with the super intelligent guy on the TV set.
Nobody is interested in the boring old truth. And snark a la PJ O’Rourke is only effective with people already on your side.
Pascal says even though this may be true it’s too late to even try on this front. Maybe. maybe we’re just in for a hot wet war. I hope not.
otherwise, as entertainers? fine. As humans? Good riddance to bad rubbish. Come and get Roseanne Barr while you’re at it, Binky.

That will sting in some places. Not here.
Yes, the demons have won with Williams and Bacall. We need to not listen to that siren call.
I think that says it all. I was never a big fan of Williams, enjoyed Bacall’s oeuvre (particularly when she worked with Bogey), but I’ve long been fond of the line from My Favorite Year: “Of course [s/he’s] beneath us, he’s an actor.”
Whenever I hear of a celebrity who dies by strangulation, I think “accidental suicide”. I think his real goal was self gratification, but that is just so tawdry, so the official story is “suicide” to make him look like a victim and draw sympathy.
I wasn’t there, but I don’t think this was AEA. At that level of cash you can hire a pretty good hooker to strangle you while you get off. And with the ability to buy actual pounds of blow, why just rub one out? No, I think this was legit suicide, probably brought on by being a self medicated loveless wreck.
Good actors, and I ignore the rest of the shit…
I wasn’t there either. I’m just telling you what I think.
It’s much easier for a wealthy man to overdose on good anesthetics than to choke himself. And a good quality hooker know when to let herself out.
Hale’s point is not without merit. “Unloved” fits the depressed quite well, and this guy was a genius — especially at improv.
And sometimes things are simply as they appear.
Never forget this and let us pray for his soul: with the SSM as strong as it is, cynicism is never far from being top dog.
My first thought was, “It must be nice to get so much poontang that you have to start experimenting with the dangerous stuff to get your off on.”
I connected these dots:
Williams had two heavy alimony payments, heavy enough to make him sell two houses and go back to work to keep from financial ruin. Since he and his current wife had separate sleeping quarters, I wonder if he was about to face an insurmountable wall of a crushing third alimony settlement.
My understanding is that his children distanced themselves from him over his drug use.
If he did have the onset of Parkinson’s, there was a huge medical bill and incurable disease he’d face on his own after his third divorce.
I understand he had no religious affiliation, and if one doesn’t believe in the hereafter, what’s there to hold one responsible if one decides to end it all at 62 facing a checkmate scenario as described above?
Now to see what the mercenary Hollywood wives do with his estate. Who wins cash and prizes? Who gets residuals? Will they keep him above ground in a refrigerated morgue until lawyers hash it out ala James Brown? Will someone steal the guy and be forced to turn him over ala Casey Kasem? Tune in to the next episode.
