It has been a very, very long time
since I have had to use my fists on anyone, and I like that just fine.
I wish it could have continued to get longer.
With the “Trigger finger” I have these days, the act of making a fist results in some discomfort, and smacking something locks the finger in place so that it has to be forced straight again.
Still. Nice to know I still have that jab when I need it. And that it still works on the first application.

I busted the knuckle on my trigger finger over 40 years ago now. It has never been right.
My punches till work though. TKD has helped a lot. Gives me a little more control on the trigger for release of the fist of doom than I had in the past.
Sometimes though, a punch might be what is needed.
Hmmmmm…. some men just can’t be talked to. They gotta learn the hard way.
Although, at some point in the future, I’d love the details.
What Dave said.
I think the last time I actually hit someone in anger was when I was about 15. Not that I haven’t since seriously considered the mental picture of what certain people’s faces would have looked like had I decided to open fire.
20 years ago there was a woman who was very lucky that I have never condoned violence against women. She came very close to getting slapped halfway across a break room at IUPUI. There was more than sufficient provocation, believe me, and it probably took five years off of this end of my life just holding down the urge to slap the shit out of the silly little bint.
Yeah, “The last thing I want to do is punch you, but it’s still on the list”.
Like Nathan, it’s been decades since I threw a punch in anger. At my age I’m not about to stand toe-to-toe with someone and trade punches, so if I ever DO have to mix it up the person is getting hurt as much as possible as quickly as possible.
And +1 on wanting to hear the story…..
Mark D – I think that as you get older, and you lose that feeling of invincibility, your mindset moves from “Let me show what a bad-ass I am” to “Let me put this guy down as quick as possible so I don’t get hurt.”
I don’t fear too many young punks; I do fear guys my age. Young punks want to act like roosters. Guys my age want to put me down hard and make sure I stay there.
Ragin’ Dave – then there’s the old piece of advice: “Don’t get into fights with old men. They know all the dirty tricks and have nothing to lose.”
Not a big secret. A guy hurting a dog. Something im just not in the fucking mood for right now.
Proper and acceptable casus belli for me.
You’re posting so I guess I don’t need to offer bail.
Instead I’ll hoist one in your name and offer if in person should our paths ever cross.
Forget right now, that’s not something I’m ever in the mood for.
BGM
Oh, indeed. But in another time i would have just called the police.
I’d like to say it’s been a very long time since I even wanted to belt someone, but I had a customer recently…
No, he didn’t get it. But he came as close as anyone has in twenty years. I still dream about breaking his ass in half and throwing him into traffic, and sometimes wish I had, God forgive me.
Good.
Hope your hand feels fine soon.
Yeah, for this old cowboy, someone hurting a kid or a dog is asking for a world of pain.
With.security cameras in every nook and cranny, I know I will never be able to deny an alley or elevator smack down. So if I wail upon someone, I stand to lose my voting and gun rights. So the minute I feel the need to deliver, I will not let up until I made it worth losing that. So I doubt I’ll be in a regular fight again. But if I do, the guy will look like a tank ran over him. I’m meek like the Bassett hound on the old Yogi bear cartoon, who went berzerker when needed. I scare me. But a guy abusing a dog, and not to defend himself from an attack, sometimes, the most curious things happen to people months after the fact. Don’t know how that rusty blade got on your steering wheel, buddy. Damned kids, nowadays.
All about situational awareness.
Like the t-shirt says, a major cause of stress is the overwhelming desire to beat the brakes off someone who truly deserves it.
There’s far too many humans on this planet that continue to walk around only because there’s laws against beating the brakes off people, no matter how richly deserved.
Some of our greatest truth tellers and philosophers have dealt with this situation. Here’s a dissertation on the subject by Shel Silverstein and Bobby Bare and I hope it makes you feel a little bit better.
