Not many things will bring a tear to the Eye of Og.
Hat tip to Countertop. Who coulda brought me better news on a friday.
I’m not kidding, folks, I’m sitting here cradling my old 94, on the ragged edge of bawling like a kid. It’s a colder world we live in, where never again will we hear anyone say “I just bought a new Winchester!”

And the thing is, I don’t own a single Winchest.
Marlin? Yep.
Remington? Yep
Browning? Yep
Smith & Wesson? Yep
Colt? Yep
Winchester? Nope. Was never a ’94 fan (like my Marlin better) but loved the Model 70s. Had a chance to buy a 1956 Model 70 in .30-06 (is there a more classic gun) a couple of years ago but passed it up cause I didn’t have the cash on hand, was thinking of quitting my job, and my son’s birth was a couple of weeks.
Should bought it.
Yeah, I’ll probably be banned for life for this, but I absolutely love my Marlin.
Had one Winchester and I never did feel like Chuck Conners, damn.
Marlin makes fine rifles too, Dick. And they’re still in business.
Gotta 70 Featherweight, .270, that I love.
It’s too bad they’re gone, but there are others.
Always liked that Marlin 30-30…
Another American Icon dead.
Talk about an end of an era. Winchester has gone Out with a Bang. The worst part about the whole thing is that I can just see anti-gun fanatics dancing in the streets at the news of this. To me…
It is indeed a sad day, and like several I don’t own one. I was raised with Marlin, and still have my first Marlin .35 Yet and still, it is a bad day, a cold day, when Winchester goes away.
*sigh*
The ONLY good news out of this whole sordid mess is that it made my BAG Day decision easy. Winchester 94 in .357 Magnum.
And I’d better pick up a rifled barrel for the 1300 while I’m at it…
Another Marlin guy here, 45-70 Guide Gun. I owned a few Winchesters and still have one, but the Marlin is a better gun. The Model 70 no screaming hell either, IMO. Good bolties are made by pretty much everyone. Copycats abound that are as good as the originals or better.
I am completely baffled at the sense of loss that I feel over this.
it isn’t even about liking their guns, even, so much as it is about another American icon gone.
My father always wanted a lever-action rifle, ever since he was a kid. But dad being dad, he never would actually spend the money on something he didn’t “need”. He had a BB rifle that was a copy of a Mod. 94, but that was about it.
So when I got married, I figured I could show my appreciation by getting him something he’s always wanted. I found a used Model 94 in great condition at a local gunshop and picked it up. At the reception dinner when we were passing out gifts, I presented him with a box of 30-30 ammo. At the end of the dinner, my wife brought out the rifle. Dad almost had tears in his eyes. I say almost because Dad is a Marine, and everyone knows that Marines don’t cry.
Mom says he’s gone shooting quite a bit more than he used to ever since then.
