More gun pron
Got the barrel. A beautiful 7.62 x 39, from Numrich, plus the magazine adapter. The stock is the sporterized original- not, frankly, horribly bad. It’s got some dings deep enough I wasn’t interested in sanding out, but it has a nice flame figure on the buttstock. Just finished inletting the barrel groove in the stock, so I put it more-or-less together to take a picture.

It still needs to have the magazine housing set properly, and the trigger isn’t attached, but you get the general idea. I will probably buy a Numrich bent bolt handle. And I’ll have to take it somewhere to be blued.I can do the drill/tap to the receiver for the scope (no, I won’t be putting iron sights on it)
I thought seriously about a nice fajen stock, even a thumbholer, but this sucker as is looks pretty nice, it’s got an interesting line.

Any idea what kind of wood?
It’s apparently some kind of maple. Too light to be walnut.
I love ressurection projects like this but…
I’ve been wondering about something since you first mentioned this project how one particular detail is going to work.
This rifle is a Model 1893 Mauser is it not? If so was it not originally in 7X57 Mauser?
The problem to which I refer is that the case head diameter of the 7.62X39 and the 7X57 are quite different. If memory functions, .440″ for the 7.62X39, and .470 for the 7X57.
Do you have a replacement bolt? Or is there some other detail I’m missing?
Spanish Mausers were mostly walnut, any other wood is most likely to be Beech. Light colored wood, not as heavy as walnut, it’s a good gunstock wood.
This is clearly not walnut. If it’s beech it’s not like any other beech I’ve ever seen, it looks like a hard maple, even has a few places where there’s a flame figure to it. Beech is ordinarily a fairly straight grained wood without much figuring.
The head diameter is in fact different, I’ll have to solder in a plate and re-mill it for the russki round.
I may even try to just soft-solder in a ring.
I’ve got a formula for a gunstock stain you might like, I’ll dig it up
“I may even try to just soft-solder in a ring”
I did that in my M1916 Spanish Short rifle. I used Brownell’s “Force 44” solder. It works very well. I used an Ace Dube chamber adapter in my rifle as I wanted to do the conversion on the super cheap. I had bought a Guardia Civil 7.62×51 rework for $50.00 and wanted to shoot 7.62×39 in it. Ace’s chamber adapter works well for me. Accuracy is acceptable at minute of soda cracker. It’s a pretty good little rifle to haul around in my old ’73 VW Westfalia “Hunting Rig.” I’ve got a cute little rifle that I could lose without going broke, I can shoot centerfire rounds for not much more than .22’s and with the 154 gr softpoints, it’s good for deer. (Where I hunt 30 yards is a far away shot.) All for less than $70.00.
Yay, me! (Cheap bastige.)
Sounds sweet, gerry! I am looking forward to shooting this. I can’t silver solder the ring in, because of the heat treat of the bolt, but i can soft solder, and all it needs is to center the round.
Nice, og!
