I enjoy Marcus Aurelius
and “Meditations” is a good read, esp. in the original; the translations lose something. Of course my greek is rusty and it never was any good, so reading a page is an all evening affair requiring a notebook and a dictionary and a lot of patience.
I like the person more than his writing, through his writing. He’s a temperate man, dedicated to his job and the people he commands and rules. Legendary stoicism. And his meditations, while they describe the optimal actions of a decent man, apply equally well to those who are not decent.
Pascal often opines in private about the malthusian nature of the left, and he’s absolutely correct; the left has made a crusade out of controlling energy, messing with food production, punishing “breeders”, etc. At the end, all of their agendas are about controlling the population in some way or another. But what about the beginning? What about Marcus Aurelius’ first principles?
That’s an easy one. Wealth.
The left has a very private in crowd of wealthy people, who have a clear and specific agenda, and that is to stay rich. Unlike sane people, they believe wealth is zero sum, and that if other people have money it somehow diminishes theirs.
To a certain extent they are correct; the more people keep their own money, the more they can do, and the less “Special” the wealthy are. It is much more desireable to have the only $3 million yacht in a harbor full of $20k boats than to have a $3 million yacht in a harbor full of $3 million yachts. At that level of stored wealth, nobody wants to be just like everyone else. Libertarian and conservative types want to have the right to keep their money and build wealth, and if they are allowed to do so, the “Special” become less special. So a system has been devised to separate the upstarts from their cash in the holy name of social justice and caring for the poor and downtrodden, which frankly, we used to do on our own as individuals.
The structure of this system imposes financial punishments for attempting to get out of the “Them” class and get into the “Us” class. And at the end of the day, the big lie is that they accuse their enemies of the most important thing to them, which is “Class warfare”. If everyone is really the same, nobody is special. So “Social” programs are invented, a huge rathole down which your money and mine is poured, not because it will “Help” anyone, because it doesn’t. The reason is simply to prevent our ability to keep it. Everything the left does is, at the end of the day, a tool to make this happen. They don’t give a shit about gays, they’re just a weapon to use against the church, which they consider an enemy because of it’s wealth. They don’t care about the poor, in fact poor people are one of their greatest methods of draining your wallet and mine. The only thing the wealthy are concerned with is maintaining the gap between them and us, so that their wealth will always set them apart and provide them with special privelege.

Of course my greek is rusty …
Show off.
I have a hard enough time reading instructions in English that were translated from Chinese by someone who doesn’t speak English.
Greek is not that difficult a language. And i totally suck at languages.
Thanks Hale. Back to the subject….
Two things Og. Malthusianism provided a cloak of concern, as in concern trolls, for those who have always hated the commoner. Malthusianism was created at the same time things were developing that led to the end of aristocracy as an institution. So the wealth and power saw in it the means to reclaim control.
Seems to be working.
And I’d add to your point one more thing that is found in the aristocracy nasty name for commoners — hoi polloi. Steal our wealth and prevent our building it — and make the middle class THE enemy as did their most famous toady Marx — and then we won’t be able to buy our way into their presence.
Prezactly. First principles: what do they do. Everything we see is just their method;we need to remember their madness too.
Their madness is all around I’m afraid, and seems to be contagious — what with the help of all forms of SSM leading the way.
I hope this exercise grows out because in it I see an antidote — awareness! We’ll see how much others have to add to it. Your readers are pretty quick.
I have been pondering lately how our present system is different from the indentured servitude of the days past. Topically I can’t see how we are more free today than in the dark ages.
We are allowed to posess the illusion of freedom so long as we dont get uppity and try to use it.
Read “the wild and free pigs of the Okefenokee” Mr Chubbins. Too many confused the appearance of free stuff as the offering of freedom rather than its reverse.
I studied German for 4 years in HS.
I studied Arabic for 4 years in College (three dialects).
I studied Spanish and lived in a Spanish speaking country for three years.
Add to that, the British dialects and rules of spelling and a lifetime of English (American) language education and usage.
The result is a confused jumble of diction, grammar, and spelling rules inside my brain that makes turning rational thought into written or spoken word a labor of Hurcules. If I were to add Greek or Latin into the mix, I am certain I would become illiterate and have to get all my information from YouTube henceforth.
Lol. G-d bless you. I know what you mean.
Professor my respect to you. When I had to learn my third language (English) my sentences were a mixture of all 3 with the sentence only making sense in my mind. How you keep it all separate is amazing.
I cannot keep them separate. I “learned” the new languages by sacrificing my impecable execution of English, only to also lose the foreign languages through attrition and neglect. The spongy parts of my brain are not as spongy as they used to be. I find language is less important to me now than it used to be. I try to maintain enough of it to express a few complex ideas on the internet and not look like a total moron. Sometimes it works. But I know that there are ideas that I used to know the specific words for that I can no longer recall.
I frequently find myself mangling German and Japanese together.
Their base concept is to separate US from out money for their gain… Period…
The Greek you know, would it happen to be Koine Greek? Well then, you can read the New Testament and early writing of the Church fathers in the exact, precise language in which they were written.
mts1, I suspect that is exactly why Og learned Greek. Something to do with nearly completing Seminary…
I did complete seminary, I just didn’t go on to orders. And, yes, Koine.
