Project gun.
So the 93 Mauser in 7.62 x 39 saw some action on Monday, I have acheap scope on it and a decent trigger in it, and I put about a hundred rounds of tulammo through it.
And man did I suck.
I had to pick up a friends gun and shoot it some to make sure i could still shoot. I can. I put 10 rounds of 223 downrange about, oh, 50 yards, offhand, and I think you could have covered the resulting group with a quarter.
So either the barrel I have is for shit, the ammo is crappy (THe Tulammo did seem to vary in recoil) and or the scope is moving. And there remains the “I suck” portion of the equation.
But it shouldn’t be. THis little rifle ought to shoot fine, and if I can take all the variables out of it, and it doesn’t start shooting better, it will find a new home. I would gwt a nice group and then it would fan out five inches across. i know I don’t suck that much.

Ammo? I had the same experience with a 22 pistol recently. 3 inch random groups that drove me nuts and made me question my abilities or the guns abilities . Switched ammo and the groups shrank to something reasonable and driven by my (lack of) skill.
I have no experience with the 7.62×39 but did they not have a bunch of different bore diameters? Maybe a bit of a mismatch?
Welcome to 7.62 x 39. I could get some decent group with flyers out of the CZ I had. But I never trusted it fully after I missed a deer at 75 yard with it.
Not sure what the problem was but decided 5.56 is not a bad round and I gave 308 and 30-06 or those longer ranges.
Handloading might be the only answer, as most the ammo out there in that chambering varies wildly.
Might even be worth slugging the barrel, just to ensure that it’s to the spec you’d paid for?
I forgot also, do you have a chronograph? That’d be the number one variable to start to measure, I’d think?
Given that I know you to be as knowledgeable as all but the most ardent bench rest & precision handloaders, I’m certain that you’ll get it dialed in sooner, rather than later.
To this end though, as I work-up my custom ’98 Mauser project, I’ve determined that I’ll buy a chamber reamer to spec, and then send it to both my barrel maker, and to the loading die manufacturer, to have both of those items made to match.
Eliminating variables, best as I can.

This is a shilen barrel, so I suspect it’s just fine. My money is on crappy ammo. I’m going to get a box of something decent and try that. I have some 30 cal slugs so I can check it, but I expect it’s right on spec. The liklihood that the $12 scope is bouncing around is good too. Gonna have to put my hands on a little redfield or something.
Anyone make a 6.5 Grendel barrel for Mauser actions? That should make a great shooter….
Does that ammo guy of yours do 8mm Mauser, by chance?
No, but there’s so much good 8mm out there it’s not funny. And if you want really good stuff, you can go for the Norma. Guys use that for some pretty big game.

If you were local I’ve got some Olympic that’s Boxer Primed to try out.
I’m betting it’s the Tula Ammo…
7.62X39 out of a Mauser?
That’s as wrong as a 9mm 1911.
Aside from that there’s the fact 7.62X39 bullets range from .308 to .311 diameter. Time to break out the micrometer.
Stretch: 93 mauser. Very common conversion. Receiver too light to take any heavier load. Commonly rebarrelled to 257 roberts, the 7.62 x 39 is a better fit. These bullets were consistently .311. I always have a micrometer in my pocket.
And WHY exactly are you carrying a micrometer in your pants pocket? :-)
“Is that a micrometer in your pocket or…”
Ah, never mind :)
93 Mauser?
6.5×55 is the One True Caliber…
yes. The one true caliber that will blow the ears off the bolt and shoot it back into my face. Weak action, folks. No high pressure cartridges.
