Winter is coming
Supposedly this is a catchword from GOT, but I’ve never seen it. But winter is coming, and living in the midwest, that means battening down the hatches. I have a new roof, and have recently rebuilt the west facing wiondows, so the critical issue has been water, and having had water pipes freeze, I am extrra careful about that. So the long life rough service bulb is in the well pit and the thermometer as well, and I have covered the well pit with foam to keep it from the worst of the cold.
Hopefully nothing new will manifest itself. Hopefully this winter is mild and mellow.
Woohoo! I was able to leave the windows open last night, which means I’m in that sweet spot of the annual Houston weather cycle where it’s perfect.
Hope your winter is as mild as mine will likely be.
Might want to try some heat tape, or a heat sock from Greenhill Mfg.
Hope you are right about winter. seems to be some one left the door open around here. Cold weather coats will be needed for a time.
Dear Og
Not sure which corner of which state you are in, but we had snow last Saturday (it did not stay long, but SNOW! enough to have to scrape off the car)
SW Michigan has already hit freezing and expect more tonight. Drained all the outside pipes and shut off the feed, rolled up all the hoses, you know the drill.
Have a small water entry somewhere on the roof by the chimney and where 3 angles come together, was on roof two Saturdays ago, last day it hit 70, and caulked it. Now need another downpour to see if it worked.
The usual stuff, then starts round 2 of the great leaf cleanup, only the 5 varieties of maple around here don’t coordinate, so it goes on for weeks (or until the snow cover becomes permanent). Carry on, brother in tools.
I figure the house will be maintenace free just about the weekend I cack.
Here in NC [where it’s supposed to NEVER get cold enough to freeze pipes – but did in our house] I’ve put one of those oil filled electric heaters under tarps in the well house. It’s on a thermostat and goes on at 40 degrees.
I have one of those little underdesk ceramic jobs for under the house.
Grey: I have heat tape on the pipe, but I’m a little paranoid. So I’m trying to keep the whole well pit warm. Ish. but the heat sock is new to me, so you can bet I will be investigating that. Thank you!
