superstitious
Cue Stevie Wonder
Freddie is talking about superstitions and their effect on her life.
As a child of romanian/hungarian/german extraction, whose grandparents I clearly remember, I witnessed my own share of superstitions. And saw things that can’t be explained by science, saw them with my own eyes.
I saw my gramma stop the bleeding of an open blood vessel on my dad’s leg, by praying and nothing else.
I saw my uncle get a burn on his hand that went to the bone, and saw my aunt do something to it, and the burn healed without even a scar.
I saw my grandfather call down lightning from a clear sky. Saw it hit a tree and split the tree from tip to root.
My dad picked a dog from a litter (a peke/toy manchester mutt we called Lucky) and called it a “wart dog”. THe dog would lick a wart on your hand or arm, and in a couple days, it would be gone. Without a trace. People would come by the house to have warts licked by this dog.
I asked about these things, wondered how these family members knew how to do these things. I never got any good answers.
I’m not without some of those skills. I can dowse, and more than once I’ve helped someone pinpoint the location of a septic tank or water line. I can split cordwood cleaner than anyone i know because I can read woodgrain. I have a feel for mechanical things like few people I know.
Superstitions? faith healing? no idea. What I do have, is the belief that there are things we don’t understand- yet- but I also know that when the answer to those things is found, it will be perfectly scientific.

Despite being about as hard-boiled a skeptic as it is possible to be, I have seen things that I can’t explain.
Ok. I had to look up dowse. Very interesting. I’d rather be able to do that than have the potential to receive death alerts in my head!
And thanks for the funky earworm. Paybacks[insert ellipse]
I can sometimes see things about people. Sometimes it’s visual, other times I just “know” and I don’t know how. Occasionally I’ll see things that haven’t happened yet, usually in dreams, but not always. And even rarer, I have been able to focus enough to change something. Like I said it’s RARE, probably happend less than 3 or 4 times in my lifetime.
I know darned well I’ve had precognitive dreams.
Problem is, it’s so brief, rare, and long before the event, that it does me no good. And so far it’s always been mundane stuff.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there really IS such a thing as a “technician aura” (Y’know, how the moment the computer tech touches the machine – not even doing anything – you can’t replicate the problem, cuz the thing starts working perfectly?). I’ve seen it happen from time to time.
My uncle can dowse.
Science can’t explain any of it yet, not without invoking quantum. Maybe that’s what happens – people manipulate quantum probabilities on a local level with a limited domain.
It’s gonna be neat when we learn how and why it works :)
My grandfather talked about watching people dowse. He was a fervent Christian but believed in that kind of ability.
Me, I muck around with mechanical things, and sometimes they get worse. They have no respect for degrees in mechanical engineering.
Dude, every comment I make on here is denied as questionable.
I have all the psychic abilities of a lump of clay, but just because I can’t tune in doesn’t mean it cannot exist.
Contagion: No ellipses. I don’t know why. If it’s not that, try leaving out the URL, and I’ll edit it in later.
I have to agree with Charles. I have to see it to believe it and some of the crap I’ve witnessed defies all known logic.
I’ve been “pushed to the limit” in a sense, if you catch my drift (and can’t explain how), but will not comment any further :)
I’m thinking that “calling down lightning” thing would come in mighty handy.
Especially on Fucktard Friday :)
I gotta tell you, Grau, I wish I could. Maybe I need to get hit first-Gramps and Dad were both hit by lighting several times.
There’s lots of strange stuff out there. Which is one reason I get so pissed when some scientist turns out to be very fond of the word ‘impossible’.
“I can split cordwood cleaner than anyone I know because I can read
woodgrain.”
Between that and a twenty lb splitting maul, many a cord of oak yielded up
it’s splits to me. I don’t know if that’s in the same category though,
because there are certain patterns to look for on the wood that don’t
take anything supernatural to see.
Then again, mechanical diagnostics seems natural to me too, and there is
doubtless something more than skill or experience at work when the
answer comes more quickly than a deductive reasoning process would allow.
I’ve never had much luck with traditional dowsing rods. But I’ve done
something similar by feel. I just need to know how what I’m looking for
feels first, sort of like a bloodhound needs a sample scent to go off from.
Prophetic dreams? I had a crystal clear one back in March that
came true almost precisely about a month later.
