Memorial Day

Grass by Carl Sandburg

PILE the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo.
Shovel them under and let me work—
I am the grass; I cover all.

And pile them high at Gettysburg
And pile them high at Ypres and Verdun.
Shovel them under and let me work.
Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?
Where are we now?

I am the grass.
Let me work.

For all those under the grass, and those yet above it who made a difference- and everyone made a difference who served or serves still:

Remember.

Hornish drinks the milk

Good boy. And marco and Michael Jr in 2/3. Some damned good driving. helio, god love him, will be back next year. I love Helio.

Danica? learn some humility. Get your ass kicked on the track a couple more times. Maybe then we’ll be happy to see you finish first, but I was glad to see you get your teeny buttocks kicked all over the brickyard. Arrogant bitch. Here’s a clue for you: THe fans? we write your paycheck. Be nice to us. Even gramps “whiner” andretti has learned to schmooze the press.

Klas

My brother in law and his wife are in from out of town again. She’s a killer chef (not a cook, a CHEF, in the classical tradition) and she is dangerous to be around. Sowanyway,we went to Cicero today, to engage in a little petty gluttony at Klas, one of my personal favorite restaurants, a dining room filled with blackforest carvings and food that makes you stand and sing “deutschland deutschland uber alles”. Actually, the place is Czech operated, but man, is it tasty. I had sauerbraten und spaetzel, wife had a mutant chicken cordon bleu- I say mutant because the chicken this breast came from must have been the size of an ostrich. Let’s not forget the liver dumpling soup (the brotherinlaw’s wife says there is only one trouble, the bowl is too small!!)

As much as we semi-stuffed ourself, we were fine afterwards, I think because this is the food of our ancestors, our guts used to digesting it, from an entre race. Seldom do I enjoy going out so much. If you’re in town, consider Klas. For under $20/person you can eat like a bavarian king.
