In conversation last night with Pascal he mentions something that resonates with me pretty well.

Those of us who love this country tend to think a good deal of the founding fathers- they did a pretty damned good job, all things considered. Their republic- our republic- has been pretty durable.

The checks and balances that were installed did a pretty good job of making sure things would work pretty well, but they neglected to accomodate a way of dealing with a media that is utterly and completely in bed with one side of the equation or the other. The fourth estate and the first amendment were thought to be the tool that was required to keep the politicians in check, and in the beginning, perhaps it worked that way- as both sides of the political spectrum may once have been represented as they are not now.

It has happened that the fourth estate has become the propaganda arm of one party, and they use that power to be kingmakers on almost every level. I will go Pascal one better-or maybe two– and state that the kingmakers have also helped birth a corrupt and insanely powerful organized labor, which provides the muscle that the mere words of the fourth estate lack, and an educational system which indoctrinates from an early age to make the job of the media and unions that much easier. The left cannot win elections without lying about what they do and who they are, and they cannot get sane people to believe their lies unless they educate them from the ground up to buy the lies.

Our founding fathers would perhaps have balked at making a mechanism that involved our government to deal with this, and rightfully so. In the time our nation was founded, those people interested in freedom were pleased to put their lives on the line, and would, if they were here, probably tell us to “Man up, and do what you know needs to be done”. They would probably be right- but we have been “Civilised”. Will we be able to shed the chains of ‘Civilization” (Itself a useful tool of the fourth estate, think of it) and do what we know needs to be done, to rebalance the scales so that the needs of the country are represented?

Blogroll stupidity

A blog I regularly look at is Bayou Rennaisance man, and I see it’s not on my damned blogroll. That’s fixed now, but damn.

If you aren’t on my blogroll and think you might like to be there, shoot me an email at mhardig at aol dot com. The blogroll is loaded with people I disagree with, sometimes intensely- I am neither petty nor vindictive enough to delist people because I dislike them. Just because you’re a moron or a dickhead, in other words, don’t mean I won’t list your blog.

An open post

for Thewriterinblack, who has mad skilz, and who is SURE that heavy industry as we know it now is not needed and will change by some new magic laws of physics he has discovered.

Without rancor, and to avoid you having to go to Sarah Hoyts place and read through miles of comments, Sara posits that individuals have the power to do a great deal- that life will still be possible on a micro rather than a macro scale, that the social engineering Marxists want to do can not stop the individual from doing things on a “Cottage” level. (There is a lot more to the post, but this was my takeaway bit)

Anyway, I pointed out that there are still the products of heavy industry that require the ability of heavy industry- you can make a rifle, or a toaster, or a micrometer by yourself at home, assuming you have the tools and are able to acquire the knowledge, but there are things that require heavy industry, and will always require heavy industry. Several people have taken issue with this, and predictably, they are people who have no idea how the actual world works. I have invited them here to discuss this, but I expect crickets. Most of that specific type of troll will never get out from behind the safety of mama’s skirt.
