For Calvin, who came back from WW2 with a mutilated arm. Who lived on, made a good life for himself and his family. For Richard, who went to Korea a boy and came back a man. For John, who returned from Vietnam with a beard, which he wore for primarily cosmetic purposes.

Sure, sure. Danica Schmanica. She drove well, she finished fourth, she had a good run. She’s also pretty goddamned full of herself. Give me an Helio Castroneves anyday, someone who knows it’s about the fans. Someone who climbs out of his car and climbs the fence. I LOVE Helio.

And now? I LOVE Dan Wheldon. I managed to ignore the excess Danica coverage, and saw something that I never, ever saw before: Dan handed that famous bottle to his crew chief, and shared it with his crew.

Now, maybe this always happens, I don’t know. I know I’ve been watching every indy for as long as I can remember, and this is the first time I ever saw the crew share the milk. Dan was gracious and proud, and made it clear this happend FOR the fans, and WITH his crew. Bully for him. Pity he was lost in all the publicity.
