I have been following the Youtube exploits of SteveH for some time now, and i have to say, he’s as funny on Youtube as is his book.
THe videos- several of which can be found here, are a riot. If you read Hog on Ice, you might occasionally get the impression that Steve is an overeducated, self important asshole. And, well, you might be right. But the videos, which are awesome, show a side of Steve that maybe he didn’t want you to see, the side that’s actually a self-effacing, sweet guy, who loves his birds, hates being abused, and dislikes having his mug all over the internet, but does so anyway to promote himself and his books. This one rocks, and the subtitles make me laugh out loud.
I am lusting after a Coke lighter on Ebay, placed there by a friend of mine. I figure this sucker will go for a couple hundred bucks, since it is one of the rare “racist” Coke products (It plays Dixie- how or why that’s racist I don’t get but hey) and it’s in practically perfect shape. Maybe some of you like this sort of thing and have more disposable income than do I- but let me tell you, this fucker is NEAR PERFECT. I’ve held it in my hands. It’s never been filled wiht lighter fluid, and the mechanism works proerly-a miracle in it’s own right. Imagine standing on a Hotlanta street corner, lighting a smoke with your vintage Coke lighter, while DIxie plays on the tiny musicbox inside. Damn.
Last year, I got my bow too late i the season to do any hunting. SO I shot some, and parked it for the year.
I was in pretty poor shape then, and that was quite a few pounds ago. I had problems drawing the bow at the factory setting (65#) but I knew I had to work on that. I chjanged the weight setting, and put it away.
In the interim, I’ve lost quite a bit of weight, and spent a lot of time working on the road in factories, much less in offices. So there have been plenty of opportunities to work, though I have done almost no lifting of weights.
So I pull the bow tonight out of it’s case. And draw it.
And I let it back, carefully, and think, “I adjusted this down”. I looked. I ddint’. I adjusted it up, to about 90#. And I can draw it and hold it for ages, it feels like I’m pulling on a rubberband slingshot.
It’s wonderful to see things come together like this. And since I’m hungrier now, maybe I’ll be a better hunter.
