damned rain
Club was packed with a 3 gun match, and so Partner and I went to Kingsbury- actually, it was nice to get back there- of all the DNR ranges this will always be my favorite, it’s clean, well run, the rangemaster is a good guy, not too many morons. We set out to sight in the scope on Partner’s Gibbs replica 03-A4 rifle. I wasn’t about to shoot the Arisaka at the crowded range; though I trust my work I still test it. And I was damned if I was gonna take any kind of risk where other people are around.
Anyway, the 03a4 shoots nice, but the barrel seems to grow and the point of impact move around. It might well be the scope mount; they have apparenly a notoriety for shooting loose, but it certainly didn’t feel loose. So we’ll loctite it, shoot it again, shoot it a lot, and see if the barrell settles in after a few hundred or a thousand rounds.
Damned fine rifles. Even for a replica. I’d have loved to see one of the origiasl Star Gauged rifles, with that lovely Unertl scope. Or, for that matter, one of those Pope Krags.
Best thing ever is to have a friend who has the disposable income to spend on toys like this, and lets you play with them

I had the same problem with mine. I was going to locktite the bolts for the mount, but one of the guys at the club stopped me. He says the small bolts sometimes become just about permanent with the locktite (which I have run into on the really small bolts). What he recommended and a few of the other shooters out there agreed on, was clear nail polish. He says you let it cure overnight and it holds fine. When you need the bolt out, It breaks away with a turn of the wrench. Says alot of manufacturers use this method as well, but they use a particular color so they can tell if someone was into an area of the gun that would void the warrantee. I haven’t had the opportunity to put it to the test, but figure it is worth a try.
We use red on even the smallest stuff. Thing is, a tiny bit of heat will loosen red- like one of those butane lighter “Crack pipe” blowtorch things. I wouldn’t do that to the scope screws, but the ones that hold it to the rifle, certainly. I’ll have to give it a try on those 10-48 scope screws, I’ll tap a couple holes and put them in and see how they hold up- or don’t.
How friendly are the Indiana public ranges to Illinois residents?
I want to zero CMMG .22lr upper, I read somewhere that you could bring a rifle in to Indiana to shoot but being from out of state not pistol?
Something about the carry permit in Indiana?
Have you ever shot at the La Salle range?
Just a quick aside, you mentioned on CByrne’s blog that you were a Dr Who fan, what did you think of the first two episodes of the new season….
The wife and I were not the biggest fans of the new doctor, he hardly seems old enough to drive a car, but I have to say that he has grown on me.
Indiana gun ranges used to let illinois shooters in if they had a FOID card. Now not so much.
La Salle has no more range, they couldn’t keep it manned and so shut it down. I have been at every shooting range north of indy.
