having seen Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent, I like him as Watson a great deal.
However, I have been reading Doyle since I was seven, and Sherlock was never a dick. Oh, he had his little jokes on Watson but he was always loyal and kind to his friend. The idea that snide sarcasm = dizzying intellect is one that appears to be uniquely British, or has a uniquely British impression. I do not think that to be necessary, it detracts from the stories, and it makes the whole series less than it could be, which is brilliant. I don’t know if it has been written/directed this way, or of Cumberbund is injecting this into the mix, but it is stupid, unnecessary, and wrong. Do it well, morons, you’re better than this.
Update: This is the Sherlock I will always think is the best.
When this came out I was in my mid teens and I had that poster of Linda Ronstadt. You know, the one with the multicolored top, the black hair with the low bangs, the stirrups hoop earrings and stoned look on her face.
Yeah, I spent a lot of time holding up that poster with one hand. She had the kind of face that had that effect on me, still does- the little pixiesh girls with the dark eyes and the corners of their mouths turned up in the merest smile. I think big guys always go for the tiny girls, maybe we think the size will breed out eventually. Could be just how those tiny hands look on my… but enough about that.
I would like to hope we’ve turned the corner and it will start getting warmer for here in but I know better. At least I have, thanks to a lot of good friends, a lot of firewood.
