In “Man of the Year” Robin Willimas runs for POTUS. Robin williams is a fine actor, but this is a remarkably stupid idea, and here’s why.
Comedians are notorious assholes. Oh, there are notable exceptions, but if you take a coarse cloth and a bar of soap and wash a comedian, you’ll find an asshole.
Ask anyone who has ever done stand up comedy, and you’ll find that in this business like almost no other, nice guys finish dead last. Funny people tend not to be too accomodating of the success of others, and between them, it shows. Again… I’m told Jeff Foxworthy is a decent guy in person, and if so I’m glad. It’s not easy for someone who is genuinely nice to succeed, and I’m pleased when someone does, but they are the exceptions to the rule, undoubtably.
This phenomena is not by any means limited to stand up comedians; look at the people who write comedy. Two of trhe most (to the mass market) funniest guys in the business are Tucker Max and Maddox. No matter who you are, you can probably find something on either site to laugh about. And if you read the sites carefully, you’ll come to the same conclusion. They’re stone assholes. And the more of an asshole you are, the more likely you are to succeed. They will do remarkably well.
In the same vein, Steve H is a sort of a pseudoasshole. I hope he’s the exception that proves the rule; in fact, if you’ve read his blog enough, you have doubtlessly seen the times when he reveals himself to be a compassionate, decent person, something utterly lacking in the personas of Max or Maddox. A lot of the time, Steve acts as if he’s God’s Gift, but it comes off like cheap instant tan once he lets you peek beneath the surface. I hope Steve’s books do well, and make him money, because it will show me that it’s possible to be a decent person at your core and still succeed.
No, we don’t want or need a comedian as our president. We’ve already had a clown, and we may yet have his wife. Nobody that big an asshole has any business at the helm.
