Wandering around the field yesterday with an actual rifle with actual cartridges felt damnably good. Like the state of indiana figured out I’m actually responsible to carry a repeating rifle.
Lots of deer. No bucks. Have to bring my antlers afield so I can do some rattling tomorrow. Plus, while I’m pretty scent free, turns out the stand I’m working isn’t. Will change that tomorrow.
Nice time of year to be hunting. I love being out in the field, I’m more comfortable there than anywhere else. And there’s so much to see, if you can be still- I saw turkeys, hen pheseants, squirrels by the dozen, and even a nimrod or two. (yes, some teenagers had driven a stolen Blazer into the field and were trying to unstick it. They ran off and the DNR had to go extract it, and return it to it’s rightful owners)
Rachel is struggling with Digger’s last moments. Go give her some loving.
Remember this:
Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.
-Mark Twain, a Biography
The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven, not man’s.
– Mark Twain, Letter to W. D. Howells, 4/2/1899
