yeah, John Wayne- Marion Michael Morrison- would be 100 years old today.
The Duke was his own man. No rules applied to him other than the ones he made himself. My father’s name was Marion, and the two were much alike in a lit of ways- when I think of Dad, I think of John Wayne in “Quiet Man” and Gary Cooper in “Pride of the Yankees”. He combined a lot of the qualities of both roles.
In his own words:
“I would like to be remembered, well…the Mexicans have a phrase, ‘Feo, fuerte y formal’. Which means; he was ugly, strong and had dignity.” (Time Magazine interview, 1969)

Came home today from a side gig to find out the neighbor’s boy had killed one of the smaller groundhogs in the back yard. Whippersnappper. I’m gonna have the damnedest time getting rid of the rest of them. He would take the easy one.
