Lowering the bar

Pascal has a post up in which he talks about the lowering of the bar. Politics, he reminds us, have become so malignant that the parties have deteriorated (as demonstrated in the Dem debates tonight) that all they have to offer us is “We’re not them”.

Let’s ask for more. Let’s demand more than just the lowest common denominator. Let’s raise the bar. How do we do it? I don’t know. I’m trying to do it by raising the bar for my child; by teaching her not to surrender to the lowest common denominator.

Democratic debate wrapup

“I’m not George W Bush!”
“I’m SO much more not George W Bush than you!”
“I’m so much more not George W Bush than you I’m a WOMAN!”
blank stares
“Well, I am!”
openmouthed incredulity
“I have a CHILD, for christ’s sake!”

“Yeah, right. I’m so much more not George W Bush than ALL of you that I’m Black, and a MUSLIM!”
“But I’m barely even HUMAN!”

WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!

I’m amazed at how heavily even the weather channel is covering the drought and heat in certain areas of the country. And focusing not at all on the swamp that used to be, for instance, central Texas.

Watched a movie called “tornado” last night, from 1996, with a fairly young Bruce Campbell. Hell, he looked a little like Mitchum in this movie. They mention “global warming” in that. Hell, if they knew aboutit eleven years ago, why aren’t we all fried?
